Online therapy allows you to engage in therapy from the comfort of your own home or other confidential space. For those who live in remote areas or experience other barriers to in-person services, this can be a valuable resource.

Lumenate offers online therapy services that are available for individuals, couples and families living within the state of California. Services are provided through online video conferencing platforms, such as Zoom or Simple Practice, which meet HIPAA security and privacy regulations to ensure confidential services. Therapy works in part because it ensures that you have a safe, private space to share about your personal and sometimes difficult stories, thoughts or emotions.

Additionally, online services at Lumenate may only be provided for people living and located in California as this is the state in which our therapists are licensed to provide therapeutic services.​
Is Online Therapy Effective?

While online therapy is a newer form of mental health support, research shows that it provides the same quality of care as traditional therapy. According to the American Psychological Association, online therapy is just as effective as in-person sessions for treating a wide range of mental health conditions, including depression and anxiety. Research further indicates that in circumstances in which mental health support is recommended, online therapy is more effective than not receiving any therapy at all.

Confidentiality - There isn't the worry about seeing other people in the waiting room. It can make it easier to overcome the stigma that has historically been attached to mental health issues.

DRAWBACKS:

Crisis/Severity - For people who have more serious or crisis issues that interfere with their daily life and functioning, it is more effective than no therapy, however, not as effective as in-person therapy.

Technology - Poor internet speed and connectivity are not conducive to consistent and reliable treatment.
​
Interventions - Online therapy is not as versatile in allowing for more activity-based interventions such as expressive arts, sand tray, role-play, etc.

Connection - Some people need in-person meetings to create a close connection with their therapist.
